Alexa Hoffman epitomizes the struggle of every college senior and job seeker. She desperately tries to avoid her backup plan of teaching English in Majuro and sets up each chapter with a countdown until her departure and finishes with a lesson learned. Although Alex starts out optimistic about finding a job with her English degree, she slowly becomes more and more jaded and therefore ridiculous in her job search. I, too, went through the extreme optimism of knowing I did all I could and the depressing lows of wondering why no one wanted to hire me. Most young people can relate to Alex in some way, whether they are having their own difficulties finding a job or they are feeling the pressure from their families to get engaged and live a middle-class, suburban lifestyle.

No matter what it is, Alex brings humor to the common struggles of young people everywhere and this book lets you know that you are not alone. This is a refreshing new book that's really hard to put down. Each of Alexa's adventures is crazier, and more hilarious, than the last. I especially like that the author has made an effort to make Alexa into a real character, something sorely lacking in the chick-lit genre. You'll laugh at her, with her, but also feel for her. I highly recommend this very entertaining book. I am a dude That's saying something, IMHO.

Horn has the wit of Wilde, the brains of Tolstoy and the commercial sense of King. Ariel Horn, where's your next book already? The book started off very funny and I really liked the premise: countdown to real life and work that happens beyond graduation. Fine, that drew me in!

Help Wanted, Desperately

THEN the book became like the movie "Groundhog Day" in that each chapter seemed to be the exact same thing - wildly crazy job interview, whining to her boyfriend and mom about needing a life, mentioning Majuro nonstop. Then she finally gets to second interview with a job and every single person working there tells her not to take the job? Where do they do that at? Why are THEY working there then? I highly recommend this very entertaining book.

Help Wanted, Desperately -- book review

Then she finally gets to second interview with a job and every single person working there tells her not to take the job? Where do they do that at? Why are THEY working there then? It was so stupid that I wanted to throw the book at that point. So that went unresolved AND Majuro was unresolved AND now she's supposed to turn into a business owner for those stupid fortune cookies? That isn't even resolved so we end the book not knowing WHAT the heck she is going to do with her life or where she's going.

Wasn't that the point of the whole book? Have you ever been on a bad job interview? Well if so, you are in good company - we all have! Alexa is in her last year of college and doesn't know what she is going to do next, but she knows she needs to find a job in the big city. The only other option is a teaching job overseas in Majuro, which is thousands of miles away from her boyfriend Jared.

Thus begins her mostly unsuccessful and insane string of interviews. She goes through a job interview where she is told she should get plastic surgery; a test run as a model scout; an hour long personality placement test, and much, much more. I've read several coming of age novels and this one was just ok. I was stranded at the airport for the holidays and read this book as a way to pass the time. I didn't think this was an amusing, clever read. A good book. A light and quick read. Alexa Hoffman is a character that you can relate to if you have ever tried to figure out what you want to do with your life.
