In addition, there are professional tips throughout to help you avoid potential pit falls and show you how to get the best out of your camera whether digital or film, it will also raise your level of understanding in photography.
In general, an excellent book which should be on every photographers book shelf, highly recommended. One person found this helpful. Bought this as a reference book to help me with photography, as I am completely new to it and have just started an AS level in it. There are very clear colour photographs on nearly every page, which are really enjoyable to look at, and the writing itself is very clearly written and easy to understand.
I like how it also shows a diagram of the parts to a SLR camera, explaining what they all do etc. Overall, I'd recommend this to any photography fan, novice or professional. I'm not a professional photographer though I try hard to get the best results I can, I find this manual a great help in most aspects of photography. I purchased a copy as a birthday present for a friend who is also an enthusiastic photographer Better than me! Well worth the price.
Good starter book, purchased for my son who has just started to take a interest in the art form. What an amazing book for only a few pounds. Beautifully written and produced, this hardback book is illustrated in full colour and guides you through every step. Absolutely brilliant. Loved the book! It is gorgeous and I mostly paid for shipping, it is almost like a gift from the shop! Full of pictures and superb quality. I bought this on the strength of the other review and it was spot on.

Review - Collins Complete Photography Manual
The book is more geared towards intermediate e. I have personally had prior learning online and elsewhere and this book provided me with what I needed - an all-in-one simplified recap, a structured project-base to improve my techniques. The problem beginners will face is that the authors purposefully attempted to "leave out" the technical details but then ironically ends up in elaborated discourses using these very concepts which they omitted to expand due to their policy of leaving out the technicalities.
Sometimes this resulted in convoluted sentences e. A glossary exists but it suffers the same drawbacks - it is extremely basic, just merely enough to remind people who already has a clue about the terms their meanings. Elsewhere even though in their quest for simplicity the authors left out the technicalities, they ironically use complicated sentence constructions.
Example: referring to a picture caption: "On the 80mm setting, the camera was moved back to 9m from Antonio to keep his size roughly the same. The meaning in context here is: for a 80mm lens the photographer has to step 9m away from Antonio in order to keep his size roughly the same as that of the previous image. Likewise in many other places they just make broad assumptions that the reader will know what they are talking about when this may not be the case. They decided to leave technicalities out but then ended up talking about more technicalities and jargons!
The book is quite small but very instructive in a simplified way and provides a short history of photography. However if you are a complete beginner I wont recommend it. But for the price and content I think it deserves a 3 stars. This is a great book, not only because of the examples well described, but because you'll have assignments to try out. Easy to read and lots of great pictures. I do like that the book puts emphasis on the fact that we all have different views on what a great picture is and that we should follow our guts in that regard.
Only had this yesterday and have already read half of it, and have picked up some really useful tips and some controls on my DSLR's Camera's that I didn't know I had. Have found it very informative, well written and easy to read and understand, having done Semi Professional Photography back in the 80's an 90's.
I lost touch with Photography some years later to concentrate on another business adventure, and now that I have more time on my hands decided to take up the Photography again. There are certain things you will never forget like composition, lighting and apetures etc, but we are now in the digital world of Photography and I wanted a book that would cover this in detail without been to heavy. Well this book is perfect for that.
I can highly recommend this to anyone out there who is thinking of taking up Photography for the first time, or the hobbyist who would like to learn even more about the world of Photography Good synopsis of how to take photos. I'm disappointed that the basic controls shown in the beginning are only for Nikon. I was looking for dials I didn't know wee on my camera, they weren't. So be warned it's not going to address cameras other than Nikon in the beginning BUT it's still helpful for basic information.
